Quotes[edit | edit source]

Season 4 is a very different season. Each of the seasons has been unique, but Season 4 is more of a psychological exploration of what happens to friends when they’re forced to keep a secret. What happens to people when their guilt and their shame starts to eat them from the inside out. Season 3 was a whodunit. Season 2 was the trial. It was about the law and justice. Season 1 was about the mystery surrounding one particular individual. They’ve each had their own unique flavors.

Nora Walker may or may not be part of that complexity. I think there’s ample room for her to enter into it, particularly in terms of Ani, since Ani was part of her household and is the line to Bryce. But we’ll see! I can’t really say how much or how little she’ll be involved.

— Brenda Strong in an interview with Pop-Culturist
We wanted to end the series hopefully, but we wanted it to be earned hope. The series was born in darkness and as is often pointed out, it is a dark series, but we have always tried to infuse it with hope and with humor where we can, and we wanted to end on a note of hope that was earned and that was not forced and also not overly sunny in a way that wouldn’t be consistent with what had gone before. The other word that comes to mind, along with hope, is survival because everything comes after our ability to survive our hardest moments and our ability to keep moving and to stay alive for all the brighter things that life has in store for us. This show started with Hannah Baker not being able to do that, and we wanted to end by seeing so many of our characters able to do that, to face the real darkness, and to come out the other side into the light. That’s what we wanted and I think and hope we achieved that.
— Brian Yorkey about how they wanted the series to end speaking to Entertainment Weekly

About the tapes[edit | edit source]

A box is found at the foot of Clay Jensen’s steps. Upon opening it, he discovers that it is a shoe box containing seven cassette tapes recorded by the late Hannah Baker, his classmate and emotional crush who recently committed suicide. The tapes were initially mailed to one classmate with instructions to pass them from one student to another, in the style of a chain letter. On the tapes, Hannah explains to thirteen people how they played a role in her death, by giving thirteen reasons to explain why she took her life. Hannah has given a second set of tapes to one of their classmates, the identity of whom Clay later discovers, and warns the people on the tapes that if they do not pass them on, the second set will be leaked to the entire student body. This could lead to the public embarrassment and shame of certain people, while others could face physical harassment charges or jail time. Through the audio narrative, Hannah reveals her pain and suffering and the slide into depression that ultimately leads to her suicide. She lists her first crush, a boy who voted her «best ass in the freshman class», a former friend, a peeping Tom, a liar, a goof who takes advantage of her, a hater, a thief who steals her poems, a member of the list that already passed, a cheerleader who crashes into a stop sign, the guidance counselor, and Clay, her soul-mate, all who thought their actions were harmless, or that they wouldn’t affect or scar her. They were wrong.

Tape 7, Side Bedit | edit source

The B side of the seventh tape is recorded by Clay, it details Bryce’s confession to raping Hannah, but not explicitly, as Bryce isn’t aware that what he said is a confession to rape.

Clay cycles to Bryce’s house to attempt to get an audio recorded confession out of him, in hopes of getting him to admit that he raped Hannah, he pretends to buy drugs from him and he starts to talk about him and Hannah, to which the extent of, is him getting beat up. However Bryce eventually unknowingly confesses to seriously sexually assaulting Hannah, which is all Clay needs, we see him make a sly smile before we see him cycle home with a joyous and relief filled scream, however we as viewers do not know that he has a recorded confession until Tony turns up at his house, they go upstairs to his bedroom and Clay puts the tape into a cassette and CD player and plays the tape, to which Tony states «He fucking confessed?!»

The tape subjects and their reasons for being on the tapes is shown below.

The Mapedit | edit source

Oh, and the box of tapes should have included a map. I’ll be mentioning several spots around our beloved city. I can’t force you to visit them, but if you’d like a little more insight, head for the stars. Or, you know, just throw the map away and I’ll never know…or will I?
— Hannah Baker

Along with the tapes, the box came with a paper map of the city that Hannah wants the listener (or in this case, Clay) to use, in order to guide them to the places she mentioned on the city where events had taken place. The locations marked by Hannah herself is listed below:

  • «C-4» — First Baker Residence, where Hannah threw her first and only party.
  • «A-4» — Down Residence, Hannah’s stalker lives here.

Hannah’s Reasons Why Not[edit | edit source]

Eleven reasons, she came up just short. But she left so many out, you know that, don’t you? No matter how many reasons there might be ‘why?’ there are always more ‘why not?’
— Olivia Baker to Clay Jensen on Hannah’s Reasons Why Not list.

Hannah Baker’s list of reasons not to kill herself: «Reasons Why Not».

In «Bye», Olivia Baker, searching through Hannah’s things, finds a list. The lists contains Hannah’s reasons why she shouldn’t ‘leave’ (kill herself). She shows this list to Clay stating that Hannah wrote it, he looks at it and she tells him that he is on there «at least once, possibly twice, did she call you Helmet?», he confirms. This makes Clay two separate reasons as to why she should stay, she also does this with her Mom and Dad. Unfortunately, the things and people on her list weren’t strong enough to keep Hannah alive, keep Hannah on Earth. The list contains people and things that Hannah would consider staying alive for, in her words:

  • Mom and Dad – They will blame themselves, and it’s not their fault.
  • New York – I could get there someday. If not college, then after college. And maybe I could start over there.
  • Clay – He will also think it’s his fault, and it isn’t. He’ll think he could have saved me. But we can’t save people, not that way at least–it’s more complicated than that.
  • Writing – I might–might–write something great one day. Get it published. Even be a writer. It seems unlikely–but possible.
  • Dad – loves me without question. Always wants what’s best for me. Even though I’m mad at him, it would be unfair to him to leave.
  • Mom – I don’t know if she could live through it. She is always so on edge already. But maybe that’s already my fault. I know she loves me–I wish she knew that I knew.
  • Mom and Dad – Worked so hard to give me a better life. Would be letting them down.
  • Helmet (aka Clay Jenson) – Is a genuinely good guy. And I genuinely like him. And maybe we’re supposed to be together. Don’t know. But maybe. If I go, we’ll never find out.
  • Maybe – Someday I could make a difference in someone else’s life.
  • Maybe – I’ll have a kid of my own one day, and maybe she could be that someone else.
  • Maybe – It’s not as bad as I think it is. Maybe it will get better.

Purpose[edit | edit source]

The «F.M.L.» acronym was used by the three friends to introduce a topic they wished to discuss within the group, hoping to solve their issues by discussing them with their friends. Hannah uses this to talk about Justin’s picture of her at the park being spread around the school by Bryce, the others tell Hannah that she didn’t have to talk about it if she didn’t want to. After this, it seems that «F.M.L.» became a regular thing for the group who would use it to bring their issues to the rest of the group.

It seems like this does well for the group as it helps them talk about their issues and seems like a cathartic exercise for the three. This eventually dies out unfortunately after the group disbands before Hannah’s death. However, after Hannah’s death—and Bryce’s—Jessica uses the acronym one last time in «Let the Dead Bury the Dead» to comfort Alex after he asks how they’re supposed to live with what they did. She tells him «We’re survivors, you and me. F.M.L. forever».

Quotes[edit | edit source]

Do adults understand how friendships work?
— Hannah Baker
It was a hot chocolate friendship, good for cold months, but, maybe not perfect for all seasons… For a while, we were the kind of friends you wish you had. We did disgusting things, like, shop together. And compare what we bought.
— Hannah Baker on her friendship with Jessica on the tapes
I’m not great at Math, but, here’s one thing I learned for sure, one plus one plus one, is not a simple equation. Alex was the first to stop coming, he found some other friends, he traded up. We were still friendly in the halls, but, that’s it. Then it was down to Jessica and me, but, then, Jessica stopped coming too. We all went our separate ways. Or so I thought…
— Hannah Baker on the demise of the group and the friendship.
Alex, little did I know, you’d F My L forever.
— Hannah Baker to Alex Standall on the tapes
I’m a fucking weak, pathetic loser who ruined the one good thing that I ever had because I wanted a rapist to think I was just like him. Hannah was my friend and we should tell the truth about her because I know that if I had still been friends with her, if any one of us had still been friends with her, she’d be alive.
— Alex Standall talking about adding Jessica’s name to The List to piss her off, breaking up Hannah and Jessica’s friendship
Jessica: «We’re survivors, you and me. F.M.L. forever.»
Alex: «F.M.L. forever.»
―  Jessica and Alex

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • In the book, the group instead use the phrase «Olly-Olly-Oxenfree» when bringing up their issues. «F.M.L.» was most likely used instead to appeal to more teenagers.
  • On the map used in the book, Monet’s is starred by Hannah with the quote «Olly-Olly-Oxenfree». It is unclear whether it had been changed to F.M.L. in the Netflix Series.
  • Hannah and Jessica refused to call each other by their names, sarcastically and jokingly after Mrs. Antilly paired them together, they eventually started calling each other by their actual names when they became each other’s only friends.
    • Jessica’s names: Joanne, Jezebel, Jennifer
    • Hannah’s names: Hazel, Hillary, Harriet

Who Hannah Sent The Tapes To (TV Series)[edit | edit source]

Tape Subject Reason
1 Justin Foley For taking a racy picture of Hannah on a date and allowing Bryce to spread the photo to the entire school and for sparking the rumors of her being a «slut» and for breaking her heart.
2 Jessica Davis For mistakenly believing that Hannah was the reason for her breakup with Alex, calling her a slut, and then slapping her. Calling her a slut meant that Jessica had started to believe the rumors that destroyed her reputation and objectified her.
3 Alex Standall For listing Hannah’s ass as the best one of school in order to spite Jessica for refusing to have sex with him, this further destroying her friendship with Jessica and her reputation.
4 Tyler Down For stalking Hannah and spreading her and Courtney’s kiss photo over the school, and for destroying her reputation.
5 Courtney Crimsen For throwing Hannah under the bus to avoid being discovered as one of the people on the kiss’ photo, and for destroying her reputation.
6 Marcus Cole For humiliating and attempting to sexually assault Hannah in public on their One Dollar Valentine’s date to see if the rumors of her being «easy» were true, this helped to destroy her already tarnished reputation.
7 Zach Dempsey For stealing the «positive notes» destined to Hannah in Communications class out of revenge for her dissing him, and for breaking her spirit.
8 Ryan Shaver For stealing a poem she wrote noting her personal problems and publishing it in the school newspaper without her consent, which further broke her spirit.
9 Justin Foley

For not stopping Bryce from raping his girlfriend, Jessica. Hannah includes herself on this tape as well as she did nothing to stop Bryce from raping Jessica.

This is the first tape where Hannah includes herself alongside the tape subject

10 Sheri Holland For abandoning Hannah after she crashed her car into a stop sign which later caused the death of Jeff Atkins and then refusing to accept responsibility for her actions.
11 Clay Jensen

For leaving Hannah at her request, after they shared a kiss. However, Hannah notes that Clay does not deserve to be on the tapes (she confesses her admiration and like for him) but it was necessary to add him to the reasons because he was important to what happened and she wanted him to know. Hannah again includes herself on this tape as she blames herself for pushing Clay away.

  • This is the only tape made for a person who is not one of the reasons for why Hannah killed herself
  • This is the second tape where Hannah includes herself alongside the tape subject
12 Bryce Walker For raping Hannah in his hot tub, this broke her soul and pushed her to suicide. In the tapes she states that Bryce had forced her to live up to her reputation, which she knew would never go away.
13 Kevin Porter

For not helping Hannah after she described rape and her suicidal thoughts, he failed to realize she was asking for help when she was giving «life one more chance.» This tape includes the entire conversation that Hannah had with Mr. Porter. He tells her that if she can’t name Bryce or confront him, she needs to try to «move on», which ultimately, is what she does after the conversation.

This is the first tape where the actual tape subject speaks in addition to Hannah and the only tape where Hannah and the tape subject speak together.

14

Bryce Walker
This tape includes a recorded confession of Bryce admitting that he raped Hannah Baker after Clay Jensen coerced and provoked him into confessing to his crime. This tape is later added to Hannah’s set to be used against him in court.

RAPIST.

  • This is the only tape not created by Hannah Baker herself and the only tape created by a person on Hannah’s list.
  • This is the second tape where the actual tape subject speaks

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • Nation Editions reported «The end of the third season concludes the Bryce Walker mystery. The group dodges the bullet with the help of Annie , who artfully blames Monty. Everyone celebrates at Monet and wants things to improve from now on. But their problems are not yet over. There are flaws in their stories that will require clarification. He has made mistakes that will come back to haunt him. The setting for season 4 of ’13 Reasons Why ‘is set by two events.«
  • Brian Yorkey stated in an interview that this season would only consist of 10 episodes: «It served the story better, and 10 episodes ended up being the sweet spot for us. I think 10 episodes is a nice length for a season. I was adamant going into season 2 that it had to be 13 because the show’s called 13 Reasons Why and if I’m a young viewer, I’m like, «13 reasons why but there’s only 10 episodes.» But at this point, heading into season 4 it was like, «We’ve given them 39 reasons why (episodes in total) at least, so I feel like we can say, yes the show is still called 13 Reasons Why, this season is 10 episodes.» It’s the right number, you’ll see that when we get to the end.»

This is the shortest season, having only 10 episodes, whereas all previous seasons contained 13 episodes each.

  • This is the first and only season that doesn’t have an official soundtrack or aftershow.
